Online Leadership Series - Greening your Fleet: Equipment Strategies for Reduced Emissions Webinar

Video Transcription

Video Summary

The webinar focused on strategies for reducing fleet emissions while maintaining efficiency and competitiveness. Dan Porterfield, Covenant Logistics’ senior vice president of maintenance and equipment control, reviewed the evolving federal regulatory landscape, including the EPA’s Phase 3 greenhouse-gas standards and ongoing reconsideration of emissions rules.

Porterfield emphasized that there is no single solution for every fleet. Operators should assess their routes, equipment, energy sources, costs, and customer needs. He compared the lifecycle emissions of diesel, renewable fuels, natural gas, battery-electric vehicles, and fuel-cell vehicles, noting that results depend partly on how fuel and electricity are produced. Electric trucks may suit certain applications, such as yard operations, but can be costly.

He also outlined practical ways to improve efficiency: optimize aerodynamics as a complete tractor-trailer system, maintain tire pressure, evaluate auxiliary power units and idle controls, select equipment suited to the job, manage speed, refresh fleets, and reduce unnecessary miles. Many measures can lower fuel costs as well as emissions.

In the discussion, he reiterated that regulations can spur progress but may also favor particular technologies. Greener operations can bring commercial benefits through lower fuel use and stronger customer relationships.
