Video Summary

The webinar “Fueling the Future with Practical Mentorship Strategies” explored how trucking companies can use mentorship to strengthen driver retention, safety, performance, and workplace culture. Panelists Wanda Brooks, Norleen Gray, and Rob Newell emphasized that effective mentorship is built on trust, strong relationships, listening, communication, and a genuine desire to help others—not simply strong job performance.

They shared practical approaches, including selecting mentors for their interpersonal skills and company-culture fit, providing mentor training, pairing new drivers with experienced peers, and maintaining contact through calls, online groups, and driver advisory committees. They also stressed setting clear expectations for mentees and supporting mentors with feedback and opportunities to learn from one another.

The panel discussed mentorship beyond driver onboarding, including helping employees transition into office roles and preparing future leaders. To demonstrate a program’s value, companies can track turnover by tenure and reason, compare results before and after implementation, measure hiring costs, and survey mentees about mentor communication and responsiveness. Ultimately, mentorship is a shared company responsibility that can improve driver experience and create a more supportive, stable workforce.
