Online RR Series: Strategic Onboarding Drives Retention and Performance-Strategic Onboarding Drives Retention and Performance

Video Transcription

Video Summary

The webinar focused on using onboarding as a strategic tool to improve driver retention, performance, and safety—not merely as a checklist of information.

Panelists described programs that begin before orientation with transparent conversations about company culture, values, expectations, and fit. One carrier combines segmented online training with in-person connection; another emphasizes meeting employees and their families, easing first-day nerves, and pairing new drivers with experienced trainers. Both stressed that drivers should feel respected, supported, and part of a community.

Learning scientist Dr. Gina Anderson explained that people cannot retain large amounts of information delivered in lengthy presentations. Effective onboarding balances content with human connection, uses multiple learning formats, and reinforces key ideas over time. Speakers recommended involving learners in discussions, gathering feedback, and acting on what drivers say they need. They also cautioned against relying on marathon PowerPoint sessions or a single instructor.

Examples of supportive practices included financial literacy programs, continuing education, chaplaincy services, leadership training, and employee assistance funds. Panelists noted that strong onboarding depends on leaders and trainers who model the company’s values and follow through on promises.

The discussion also addressed virtual orientation, independent-contractor training, and keeping materials current. The speakers agreed that online onboarding can work when it includes meaningful interaction, while digital content makes updates easier to maintain. Overall, the central message was to prioritize connection, culture, and ongoing support alongside essential training.
